Event Update Feb 17, 2020
On February 13, 2020, the eve of the second anniversary of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School tragedy, Broward College North campus in collaboration with members of the South Campus hosted the South Florida book launch of If I Don’t Make It, I Love You by Skyhorse Publishing, Inc.  This anthology collects more than sixty narratives from school shooting survivors, family members, and community leaders covering fifty years of shootings in America, from the 1966 UT-Austin Tower shooting through May 2018’s Santa Fe shooting, of which MSD survivors are contributors.

This event featured one the book’s editors Amye Archer; Dara Haas, the MSD teacher of Room 1216, who had 7 students shot in her room, 3 fatally;  Rachel Bean, a graduate from MSD now attending UCF; and Harold Ng, a survivor of the February 14, 2008 school shooting at Northern Illinois University, who shared a letter he wrote to the Parkland students that was published in the anthology. The highlight of the night was panel discussion with the readers accompanied by two local mental health professionals: Dr, Arlene Gordon a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and Director of the Brief Therapy Institute at Nova Southeastern University, and Dr. Deborah Eve Grayson, a licensed mental health counselor who is a poetry therapist and expressive arts specialist teaching at Lynn University. The panel discussed how writing and the arts have helped them through their trauma, which gave new meaning to the courses we offer through the AHCD Pathway here at Broward College.

To call If I Don’t Make It, I Love You a successful event would be a severe understatement. This event was truly a collaborative effort by so many people and organization of like the Broward County Library, the Guild for Art and Literature of Coconut and Sky Horse Publishing in additional to our college departments within the AHCD Pathway, the North and South English Departments, the North and South Academic Success centers, and the college-wide Department of Student Engagement & Cultural Affairs.  This community approach in producing such a necessary event proved to unify our community through the written word.
