The exhibit “Al di là delle reti/Beyond the Nets: The Art of Tom DiSalvo” displays select works by the Italian American South Florida artist (1945-2011). There are a variety of experiences within this show including: 

  • Images of 31 of Tom’s canvases hosted in theexhibit.io,  
  • Presentations from faculty at Florida Atlantic University who were acquainted with Tom and his work,  
  • Oral histories shared by the artist’s brother, 
  • Details and transcripts of the textual components of some of the canvases,  
  • Personal and professional photographs to provide a visual cultural backdrop.

“Al di là delle reti/Beyond the Nets: The Art of Tom DiSalvo” is a project that combines my passions and academic pursuits within the field of Italian American studies. As a doctoral student at Florida Atlantic University it is an honor to reignite the memory of a cherished member of the South Florida community and an Italian American humanist. In my role as an instructor of Italian language and culture at Broward College it is a privilege to introduce our students and faculty (of all pathways) to an artist like Tom DiSalvo, whose artistic contributions are inter-disciplinary in scope and invite critical thinking and discussion. The DiSalvo family takes pride in their ethnicity and maintains ties with the branches of their family tree reaching back to their native island of Sicily. Characteristics of Tom DiSalvo’s story fit the template of the Italian American biography, but he, as an individual and as an artist, is set apart.

Tom DiSalvo’s collection “Kandyskin Chronicle” is a unique representation of familiar icons from artists and authors of the past with delivering Tom’s unique message. The video is a brief introduction to lay the groundwork – sharing only enough information to whet the appetite. Dr. Brian McConnell is very familiar with Tom DiSalvo’s Sicilian roots and has studied his work extensively. This presentation is Brian’s commentary on Tom’s techniques and a gateway for those who have not yet experienced all of the facets of which it is composed. Dr. Emanuele Pettener, a friend of the DiSalvo family, shares his experiences as a writer who balances the two sides of his ethnicity and the forces they exert on his life, his career, and his relationships. Emanuele’s presentation is enhanced with breathtaking images of his native Venice captured by the photographer, Philippe Apatie.
